I have set up this blog to tell people about the problems with our honey bees. I hope lots of people visit and tell their friends.

If you support me and the letter below that I am going to send to politicians then please leave a comment and I will ask politicians to come here and see that it is not just me who cares about the bees.

Even if you are not in the UK you can still comment because this affects the whole world.

Thank you for reading this. Please share this and support me and the honey bees by leaving a comment so that the politicians know you care too.

love
Hermione

Dear Mr Politician

I am Hermione and I am eight years old.

I am worried about our honey bees because lots are dying. I think they are dying because of the varroa mite, bee diseases, the use of some agricultural chemicals and because there are not so many places where lots of mixed flowers grow. There is also the threat of Colony Collapse Disorder from the USA.

If our honey bees all die we will have less choice of food because we need bees to pollinate lots of food. There will be a lot less fruit and vegetables. We would have no bee products such as honey, propolis or wax. People who keep bees for a living would loose their jobs too.

I want people to understand how important this is. I know that the UK government has a bee and pollinator health fund. Perhaps the European Union has a similar fund? I would like you to encourage parliament to spend money on finding out about what is going wrong with the honey bees and how to help them.

I want to know if you care about our honey bees and if you will encourage parliament to use public funds to help them.

Yours sincerely

Hermione

  2. Hello Hermione

We've got a couple of plants in our garden that we put there especially for bees, the Hebe springs to mind. Don't know if they're any good for honey bees in particular, but bees in general like them we get a few in the summer!

It would be great if more people paid more attention to this to stop Honey bees dying out, I think lots of people don't realise how much we would all miss them.

Keep up the good work :-)

  5. This is an excellent idea. We need to do all we can to help bees. Well done, Hermione, for raising awareness of the problems that bee colonies are facing. I hope you get lots and lots of support!

Great idea Hermione. You have clearly done your research, and I hope that you get a good response from the public and and from the politicians. Something does need to be done soon because bees play such a vital role and we need to do our best to nurture them.

Well done, Hermione, for bringing this to our attention. We've got a very wild garden which honey bees and many other insects seem to like and we don't use chemicals in it. Many people just don't seem to realise how important insects are to our ecology.

  9. Hi Hermione,
I think what you're doing is brilliant. Bees are VITAL to humans - without them to pollinate our crops, we will not just have less choice of food, we will be unlikely to survive as a species ourselves. Rowse honey are also putting money into bee research.
I think it might be a good idea to find out the name of your MP, and send it to him/her - I think MPs HAVE to reply to a letter addressed to them from a constituent
    Good luck with this

  11. Hello Hermione

We are having some pipes fitted into our garden this summer and are digging another trench adjacent to plant some bee friendly shrubs in. We have a big garden and we are trying to ensure that all the plants we put in are useful to the birds and bees.

    Thank you for raising awareness

Thank you for doing this Hermione. I am 11 and my best friend's dad keeps bees and I love helping him. We got some seeds from the BBC this year especially for bees but they still prefered my Mum's lavender plant! Good Luck with your campain. From Matthew :)

  16. Hermione, what a fantastic blog! Well done.
We have lots of bee friendly plants in our garden and a big willow tree which they love in late spring/early summer. Our friend has lots of bee hives and the honey from them is the best! Keep up your fight for the bees.

  18. Hi, Hermione--

Wishing you all the best in your efforts to help save the honey bee! I established a hive last summer here in Portland, State of Maine, U.S., and it's been a total delight to watch it grow. Let's all keep saying good things about bees and pollinators in general!

  20. Good for you, Hermione!I've been learning about bees this past year and will have a hive or two here in Alfred, Maine, U.S. next spring.
We can all do something ~ blog, keep bees, plant flowers and trees, buy local honeys ~ to support honeybees and give them (and us) a brighter future. Thank you for doing your part.

  21. I established two hives here in Maine last year to do my part to support honeybees. They are endlessly teaching me about themselves and the environment. I do this for the bees and their benefits, not the honey, but the honey is wonderful byproduct.

Keep up the good work, Hemione! They are worth your support. Thank you.

    HI Hermione,
It's amazing that you've started on this blog. Brilliant. I wanted to have hives on my land but I've foudn out that I'm allergic to them :( So I've started to plant flowers as well as vegetables now and it was lovely to see so many different bees on my fruit bushes this year.
The mites you mentioned are being treated and good bee keepers keep on top of it, there seems to be other resons except for this one for the bees dying or dissaprearing and you're absolutely right, people need to hear about it and sit up and listen.
Thank you so much for taking the time to stand up and be heard.

I've blogged a bit about bees today as a local beehive that we like to visit at a museum has lost it's queen and they can't get a new one because there are so few at the moment :o(

  28. Hi Hermione, we here at Creative Learning And Support wish you all the best in your endeavours to make the world better informed and able to solve this tragic dilema. No bees = no food = starvation = death! Lets hope millions join you in trying to get the governments of the world to take this problem seriously.Keep up the good work!

  29. I don't like Bees because I can get stung! However, If we dont soon take notice and take care of our environment, Bees included, we will all get stung in many ways including the collapse of our food supply. Bees are an integral part of our food chain and must be protected. We must all do our part to hopefully avoid the collapse that is currently happening in my part of the world, North America and particularly the U.S.

  34. Hi Hermione,
Well done for taking action. I live in the US and we have an apiary at the end of our steet. The beekeeper told us all about the colony collapse problem last year. He hasn't been selling any honey from his house this year, so I hope that doesn't mean that he isn't producing much because so many of his bees have died. When I see him I will ask him. I will post the link for your blog on our local homeschool site here in Massachusetts. I know our homeschool community will be pleased to see you taking some action. Good luck with your letter to your MP.

  37. Hi Herimone - I put an old hive on my land which has not had chemicals for over 20 years, and a swarm moved in, and in just one year they made another 6 hives of bees! I have lots of wild flowers in my meadows and garden for them and they have helped my vegetable garden.

My nephew is really interested in bees. He is 9 and made his own site about bees a couple of months ago he has put some fun things on it about bees I am sure he would love you to visit his site http://buzz.webeden.co.uk/

You are the children who can change the world we live in to be a better place - so good luck and very well done for all your marvellous work.

  38. Well done! Let the world know. They are beginning to catch on, you know!

I spoke to a traditional beekeeper the other day and he said all the bees kept by people he knows are thriving, so many of the problems the bees are having worldwide may be closely related to the way they are being worked and the chemicals they are subjected to.

You might be interested in this film coming out next month - i think it's going to raise a lot of awareness.

  48. Thank you for your work on behalf of bees Hermione! I live in California where 100% of the almond crop is pollinated by honey bees! Half the commercial bees in the US are used to just ensure we get almonds every year. That's just one crop! I don't think the average person knows how much we depend on honey bees for our food. Thank you for raising awareness.

  50. We live within the boundaries of Snowdonia National Park. This year in early summer I was sad to find nearly every day two or three dead bees, in the area outside our house. Over the summer, this number didnt drop. If the bees are dying here, so early, what is happening in the rest of the country? We need to get real help to bee keepers, to protect our bees, and we need to get information out, on what plants will help them..!

Well done for taking some action for this important matter. It does need everyone, no matter where they are in the world, to recognise the important role bees play and take steps to help. Every bit helps, and trying to get the politicians to take it more serious is a great step you are doing. Also your blog can help spread tips to more people on what they can do to help.
